The ‘New Build’ Boom

Bought a new build in Huntsville? Speed often sacrifices safety. Learn why backstabbed outlets cause flickering lights and what to look for.

It feels like every time I drive past Town Madison or out near MidCity, three more neighborhoods have sprouted up overnight. The sheer speed of construction in Huntsville right now is impressive to watch, but for those of us in the trade, it’s a little nerve-wracking because speed usually comes at a cost. When crews are pushed to wire an entire house in a single day, the first thing to go is usually the fine-tuning that keeps things safe long-term, and we are seeing a massive uptick in troubleshooting calls for homes that haven’t even had their first birthday yet.

We get called out to these brand new builds where the lights are already flickering or an outlet is dead on arrival, and the culprit is almost always speed over quality. I’ll pop off a cover plate and see “backstabbed” outlets—where the wire is just shoved into the spring-loaded hole in the back of the device instead of wrapped securely around the screw terminals. It saves the original installer about thirty seconds per outlet, but give it a few months of plugging in vacuum cleaners and phone chargers, and that weak connection starts arcing inside the wall.

If you just closed on a new build, don’t assume everything behind the drywall is perfect just because the house smells like fresh paint. Keep a close eye out for flickering recessed lights or outlets that feel warm to the touch, especially during that first year while your builder’s warranty is still active. It’s always better to catch those loose neutrals before they turn into a scorched panel, so keep that warranty paperwork handy and don’t hesitate to make them come back and fix it right.
