MythBuster: Birds on Wires

Ever wonder why birds don’t get shocked on power lines? It’s not rubber feet! Learn the real reason and critical safety tips for downed lines.

small birds, possibly sparrows or starlings, clustered together on a single thick gray power line against a clear blue sky.

The Myth: Birds on Wires

Ever seen a flock of birds chilling on power lines and wondered why they don’t get zapped? It’s a common question, and the answer isn’t that their feet are insulated. It boils down to electricity always looking for a path of least resistance, a complete circuit. When a bird perches on just one wire, both its feet are at the same electrical potential. There’s no difference in voltage between them, so no current flows through the bird’s body to the ground. It’s essentially just part of the wire, not completing a circuit.
Now, if that same bird were to touch a second wire with a different voltage, or a grounded pole at the same time? That’s a different story entirely. Suddenly, there’s a path for the current to flow through the bird. That’s why linemen work with specialized equipment and training, ensuring they never become that bridge between different potentials.
You’re not a bird, and your sneakers aren’t specialized insulating gear. If you see a downed power line, assume it’s live and lethal. Keep everyone, pets included, far away – a good 30 feet minimum. Your only job is to call 911 or the power company immediately and wait for the professionals to handle it safely.
