Trades > College
Let’s cut through the noise about “college or bust.” For decades, the drumbeat was clear: a four-year degree was your golden ticket. But here in Huntsville, and across the nation, we’re seeing a stark reality shift. The return on investment (ROI) for a traditional college degree is, frankly, in a nosedive for many. Graduating with a mountain of student loan debt, often for a degree that doesn’t directly translate to a high-paying job, is a tough start. Meanwhile, the trades, especially skilled electrical work, offer a direct path to financial independence and a secure future with zero debt and robust earning potential.
The economics are simple: supply and demand. We’re facing a critical shortage of skilled tradespeople. An entire generation was pushed towards higher education, creating a massive labor gap in essential fields like ours. This isn’t just a local Huntsville problem; it’s national. What does that mean for you? It means journeyman electricians, like myself, are in high demand. It means accelerated earning potential. By the age of 22, many of my apprentices are already journeymen, debt-free, and pulling in six-figure incomes. Compare that to the average college grad burdened with tens of thousands in debt and often struggling to find a job in their field.
This isn’t to say college is bad, but it’s about making an informed, financially savvy decision. The “why” behind the wait times you might experience for quality electrical work, or the cost of a new panel, often traces back to this labor gap and the rising price of materials like copper (a physical commodity driven by global supply and demand). When you choose a trade, you’re not just learning a skill; you’re investing in an economy that needs you. You’re building a career with tangible value, immediate application, and a clear path to becoming your own boss if you choose. It’s a smart move, both financially and professionally.
If you or someone you know is considering post-high school options, research local apprenticeship programs in the trades before committing to a four-year degree.
