Dad Science: Eddy Current Drop

Eddy Current Drop Try this 5-minute science experiment with your kids this weekend.

Gravity is a law. Copper is a loophole.

Eddy Current Drop

Want to break your kid’s brain? You don’t need a tablet; you need a scrap piece of 3/4” copper pipe.

The Setup: Take a strong neodymium magnet and drop it fast. It hits the floor in 0.4 seconds. Now, drop that same magnet down the copper pipe.

The Glitch: It doesn’t fall. It floats. It descends like it’s moving through invisible molasses. It takes 5 seconds to travel 2 feet.

The Why: It’s not magic; it’s Lenz’s Law. The falling magnet creates an electrical current in the copper, and that current creates a magnetic field that pushes back up. It’s the exact same physics used to brake high-speed trains and roller coasters.

Show them that the invisible world is stronger than the visible one.
