Code Watch: The Never-Dark Bathroom

No one likes fumbling for a switch in the dark. The electrical code actually mandates specific lighting rules for bathrooms to ensure you always have a safe, clear path.

The Never-Dark Bathroom

It sounds like common sense, but the electrical code actually has a specific rule to ensure that every bathroom has a reliable, permanent light source.

The Update: The code requires at least one wall-switch-controlled lighting outlet in every bathroom.

The Impact: You can’t rely solely on a plug-in lamp or a light that is only controlled by a pull-chain. The goal is “instant illumination”—when you walk into a dark bathroom, you need to be able to reach for a switch on the wall and have the room light up immediately. This is a critical safety measure to prevent trips and falls, especially in windowless bathrooms where there is no natural light to guide you.

If you’re remodeling your bathroom, we also look at things like the placement of these switches to make sure they are accessible and safe from “splash zones.” It’s all about making sure your home’s most-used rooms are as safe as they are functional.
