EV Chargers & Load Management (NEC 2026)
You probably don’t need a new electrical panel for your Tesla.
Here is the scenario: You just bought an EV. You call an electrician. He looks at your panel and says, “You’re maxed out. You need a Service Upgrade. That will be $4,500.”
Before you write that check, ask about NEC Article 750 (Energy Management Systems).
The Update: The code now explicitly supports “Load Management” devices. In the past, we had to do math assuming everything in your house was running at once. Now, we can install a smart controller. It monitors your home’s power usage in real-time.
How It Works:
-
Scenario A: You are cooking dinner, drying clothes, and running the AC. The controller tells your EV charger to pause or slow down.
-
Scenario B: You go to sleep. The house goes quiet. The controller tells the EV charger to ramp up to full speed.
This technology satisfies the code requirements without ripping out your existing electrical service. It turns a massive construction project into a simple smart-home installation.
