Code Watch: Mandatory Surge Protection

A $15 power strip isn’t enough anymore. Why the new 2026 NEC requires “Whole-Home Surge Protection” to save your smart appliances from the “Silent Killer.”

A Whole-Home Surge Protective Device (SPD) installed in a main electrical panel with green indicator lights showing active protection.

Mandatory Whole-Home Surge Protection

Twenty years ago, a power surge might just flicker the lights. Today, it fries the motherboard in your washing machine, your smart oven, and your LED drivers.

That is why the Electrical Code now mandates Whole-Home Surge Protection for service upgrades.

The Misconception: Most people think “Surge Protection” means that little $15 plastic strip behind the TV. That is the last line of defense. Whole-Home Protection is the first line of defense. It sits right at your main breaker panel.

The Reality: When a spike hits (from lightning or just grid switching), the device at the panel eats the excess voltage before it can travel down the wires to your expensive appliances. It takes the bullet so your $3,000 smart fridge doesn’t have to.

It used to be a luxury upgrade. Now, it’s the standard. And frankly, with the cost of modern appliances, it’s the cheapest insurance policy you can buy.
