Code Watch: GFCI Expansion

Code Watch: The 2020 NEC introduced strict GFCI requirements for laundry rooms and dryers that are now standard. Here is why this safety upgrade often exposes problems with older appliances.

An electrician resetting a GFCI outlet in a laundry room behind a washing machine, demonstrating NEC 2020/2023 compliance.

GFCI Expansion

It used to be simple: If it was near water (kitchen/bath), it got a GFCI button. If it was anywhere else, it didn’t.

But the 2020 NEC changed the game, and the current codes are strictly enforcing it. It now requires GFCI protection in Basements, Garages, and Laundry Areas.

Yes, that includes the big 240V outlet for your electric dryer.

The Friction Point: Here is the conversation I have with homeowners every week: We upgrade their panel to meet the 2026 NEC standards. They plug in their 10-year-old washing machine. The breaker trips immediately.

They think the wiring is bad. It’s not. The wiring is fine. Your appliance is leaking.

The Reality: Old motors build up carbon dust and leak small amounts of electricity to the metal frame. The old breaker didn’t care. The new Code-Compliant breaker detects that leak and cuts the power to save you from a potential shock.

The breaker is acting like a Check Engine Light. It’s annoying, but it’s telling you something dangerous is happening inside that machine.
