The Myth: Microwaves Leak Radiation
You’ve probably seen the videos – holding a lightbulb near a microwave, and it glows. It’s enough to make anyone wonder if their popcorn or coffee is getting radiated. But here’s the reality: your microwave is engineered as a Faraday cage. That metal box and the fine mesh in the door are specifically designed to keep microwaves contained. Unless the door hinges are visibly bent or the mesh screen itself is torn, you’re almost certainly safe. Those fifteen-dollar “leak detectors” you see online? Most of them will beep at your Wi-Fi router; save your cash.
What really matters is a quick visual inspection. Just check your microwave door. Make sure the seal looks clean, intact, and that the door latches securely every time you close it. If everything looks good and it closes tightly, go ahead and zap your leftovers without a second thought.
The only time you should genuinely worry is if you spot obvious rips or tears in that mesh screen on the door, or if the door simply doesn’t close properly anymore. At that point, it’s not a fixable issue – it’s time to replace the microwave. Trust your eyes, not internet scares.
