That old warning about magnets ruining your computer? It used to be absolutely true, especially with those floppy disks and early hard drives. Back then, data actually was stored magnetically, so a strong enough external field could scramble everything in an instant. It wasn’t just an urban legend; it was a legitimate concern for anyone with a computer.
Nowadays, though, almost every drive you touch works differently. Your laptop’s SSD, your USB stick, even most external drives store data using electrical charges, not magnetism. You could tape a refrigerator magnet right onto your flash drive and your vacation photos would be perfectly safe. While I still wouldn’t recommend rubbing a super-powerful magnet all over your gear just for fun, you really don’t need to panic if a stray magnet gets near your modern tech.
If you really want to protect your electronics and extend their life, forget the magnets and focus on the real enemy: heat. Heat cooks components and shortens lifespan far more effectively than any magnet ever could. So, when you’re using your laptop, make sure it’s on a hard, flat surface where the vents can breathe, not buried in a blanket or on a carpet. That simple step will do more good than any magnet-avoidance ever will.
