Bubble Covers
When it comes to outdoor electricity, the biggest enemy is moisture. Standard flip-lids might keep an outlet dry when nothing is plugged in, but as soon as you plug in your holiday lights or a pressure washer, that protection disappears.
The Update: The electrical code now requires “In-Use” covers (also known as bubble covers) for all outdoor outlets in wet locations.
The Impact: These covers are designed to stay closed and sealed even while a cord is plugged in. This prevents rain, melting ice, or sprinkler water from getting into the outlet and causing a short or a fire. The latest code even specifies that these must be “Extra-Duty” covers on residential homes to ensure they don’t crack or fail over time.
It’s a small, inexpensive upgrade that provides a massive boost in safety for your outdoor living spaces. If you still have the old-style flat metal flaps, it might be time for a quick weekend swap.
