Code Watch: Kitchen Island Outlets

The electrical code just fixed the biggest design flaw in the kitchen. Side-mounted island outlets are no longer mandatory. Here is why the “Pop-Up” revolution is safer and better looking.

A stainless steel pop-up electrical outlet installed in a marble kitchen island countertop, replacing the old side-mounted receptacles.

Kitchen Island Outlets

For decades, the electrical code forced us to do something I hated: Cut an ugly hole in the side of your brand-new, expensive kitchen island cabinetry.

It wasn’t just ugly; it was dangerous. We call it the “Crockpot Loop.” You plug in a slow cooker, the cord drapes over the edge, and a toddler grabs it. Hot soup everywhere.

The Update: The new code effectively kills the mandatory side-mounted outlet. You no longer have to put a receptacle on the side of the cabinet to pass inspection.

The New Standard: If you want power on your island (and you should), we now use Pop-Up Towers installed directly into the countertop.

It’s cleaner, it’s modern, and it stops your kids from pulling appliances onto their heads.
