Visualizing Sound
We tell our kids that sound is a vibration, but they can’t see it. This build turns their voice into a light show.
The Setup:
-
The Drum: Cut the neck off a balloon and stretch it tight over the top of a rigid cup (a Pringles can or PVC pipe works best). Tape it down.
-
The Reflector: Glue a tiny shard of a broken CD or a small craft mirror to the exact center of the balloon skin.
-
The Source: Tape a laser pointer to a stack of books so the beam hits the mirror and bounces onto the wall.
The Test: Turn off the lights. Put your mouth near the open end of the tube (or speak loudly near the cup) and shout. The balloon vibrates. The mirror tilts. The dot on the wall explodes into squiggly lines, circles, and chaotic waveforms.
You are watching the physical shape of your own voice.
