Dad Science: Homemade Speaker

Dad Science: Homemade Speaker .Your expensive headphones are lying to you. They are just magnets and wire.

A homemade speaker made from a paper cup, copper magnet wire, and a permanent magnet, sitting on a wooden workbench.

Homemade Speaker

Stop treating technology like a black box. Crack it open. Every speaker in the world—from your AirPods to a stadium array—works on the exact same principle. You can build one with trash from your kitchen drawer.

The Build:

  1. Take a paper cup (this is your diaphragm—it moves the air).

  2. Wrap thin magnet wire around a marker to make a tight coil, then tape that coil to the bottom of the cup.

  3. Tape a strong magnet to the table.

  4. Place the cup over the magnet so the coil hovers around it.

The Drop: Strip an old Aux cord and twist the wires to your coil. Plug it into your phone and hit play. The electricity turns the coil into an electromagnet. It fights the permanent magnet. It pushes and pulls the cup thousands of times a second. That vibration is Mozart to Skrillex. That vibration is AC/DC.

It’s not magic. It’s just moving air.
